Fersa has introduced Fuel Efficient Generation 3, the latest development of its low-friction wheel-end technology for heavy-duty vehicles.
The new generation combines developments in lubrication, surface coatings, materials, cage architecture and wheel-hub design to further reduce mechanical losses at the wheel end.
According to Fersa, Generation 3 achieves an additional 10% reduction in friction compared with Generation 2, resulting in a 65% improvement compared with the company’s baseline solution.
Fersa launched the first generation of its Fuel Efficient technology in 2024, focusing on bearing geometry, materials, lubrication and sealing to reduce internal friction.
Generation 2 introduced further optimisation of bearing geometry, lubricant distribution and sealing.
With Generation 3, the company is extending the concept through a broader focus on tribology and system-level efficiency.
The main developments include:
advanced coatings on rolling elements;
optimised lubricant distribution;
redesigned bearing cage architecture;
high-strength materials;
wheel-hub optimisation.
The objective is to reduce energy losses while maintaining the durability required in heavy-duty vehicle applications.
Generation 3 has been developed using Fersa’s simulation, manufacturing and laboratory-testing capabilities.
The company says it can reproduce wheel-bearing VECTO test cycles internally. Any formal certification, however, would require validation by an approved independent third party.
Following its introduction, Fersa plans to work with heavy-duty vehicle manufacturers to adapt the technology to specific vehicle architectures and operating requirements.
The development reflects a broader industry focus on reducing energy losses across individual vehicle components as manufacturers seek incremental efficiency improvements.
Fuel Efficient Generation 3 was unveiled at IAA Transportation 2026 in Hannover as part of Fersa’s latest wheel-end developments for the heavy-duty vehicle sector.
